“I always had a passion for property. Two weeks into my engineering career, I knew it wouldn’t be my lifelong career. I bought my first development site at 22, got approval for five townhouses, and it doubled in value in two years,” says Derek, who transitioned from civil engineering to mortgage broking.
Derek had built a successful mortgage broking business helping investors grow property portfolios but recognized clients needed more comprehensive support. Meanwhile, Liz developed her property investment strategy during Melbourne’s lockdowns, purchasing two investment properties on a single average income.
“I wanted to do this for other people because it’s not easy unless you’re willing to put hours of research in. I wanted people to understand this is achievable,” explains Liz, who left her MedTech career to pursue property full-time.
The pair met through BAI’s Everest events and recognised their shared values. Within three months, they established a structured business model, implemented systems, and hired support staff. Their integrated approach provides seamless service from financial assessment through property acquisition.
“BAI gave me the framework to hit the ground running. I can now help clients structure their finances and acquire high-performing properties,” Derek shares.
Looking ahead, FINR Advisory aims to expand beyond standard investments to include subdivisions, rooming houses, and commercial property. Their vision is helping clients at every stage with tailored strategies and financing solutions.
“Trust the process. The first client is hardest to sign, but do a good job and they’ll tell their friends. Your past experiences will contribute to the success you bring clients,” advises Liz.
