From Nursing to Buyers Advocacy: How Michelle Lewis Is Empowering Women in the Property Market

Michelle Lewis, founder of Michelle Lewis Property based in Adelaide SA, has an inspiring story that resonates with many people looking to make significant career shifts. In a recent interview on BAI Media with James Rankin, Michelle opened up about her journey from a career in nursing to becoming a property investor, property investment and renovation coach and now buyers agent. Her passion for helping others, particularly inspiring women to succeed in the property market is evident through her work and life experiences.
Here’s a closer look at Michelle’s path, the lessons she’s learned, and how she’s using her knowledge to empower others.
Transitioning from Nursing to Real Estate
Michelle’s professional journey began in the healthcare industry as an intensive care nurse. While she enjoyed helping people, she also had a deep-rooted passion for property. She started investing by renovating the home her and her then fiance purchased. It was her first full house reno and this experience ignited a passion for real estate. What started as a side interest soon grew into something more significant. People starting asking her to help them with property investing and renovating.
“The moment I did my first renovation, I was hooked,” Michelle recalls. “I found so much joy in the process of improving properties and realised that this could be more than just a hobby.”
Despite the stark differences between healthcare and real estate, Michelle found parallels in both careers. In nursing, she developed strong communication and problem-solving skills that later became valuable in her new role as a property advisor and buyers agent. After several years of balancing both careers, Michelle made the brave decision to step away from nursing and launch her own buyers agency.
Building a Female-Led Buyers Agency
Starting her own buyers agency was no small feat. Michelle launched Michelle Lewis Property SA, focusing on the Adelaide and Perth property market. What makes her story particularly powerful is the unique perspective she brings as a woman in a male-dominated industry.
Today, Michelle’s agency not only serves a diverse range of clients but also prioritises empowering her clients especially women. She is passionate about breaking down barriers and ensuring that women feel confident when making property decisions, whether they are investing or purchasing a home. She also loves to encourage other woman buyers agents.
Her commitment to this cause has been met with incredible support. Michelle emphasises the importance of networking and surrounding herself with like minded individuals, which has been key to her success.
Overcoming Challenges and Learning Along the Way
As with any entrepreneurial journey, Michelle faced her share of challenges. One of the biggest hurdles was learning to balance her work life with her role as a mother. Building a business from the ground up requires a significant amount of time and dedication, and Michelle had to navigate that while also supporting her children.
However, Michelle used this challenge as an opportunity to build a lasting legacy for her family. She often reflects on how her work ethic will impact her children’s view of perseverance and success.
“I want my kids to see that it’s possible to chase your dreams, even if the path isn’t straightforward. It’s about showing them that hard work and dedication pay off,” Michelle says.
Michelle’s Journey with BAI and the Power of Community
Michelle credits much of her professional growth to the support and training she received through the Buyers Agent Institute (BAI). Joining BAI gave her the foundational skills and confidence needed to transition fully into real estate and launch her buyers agency. She speaks highly of the community at BAI, noting how valuable it was to be surrounded by like-minded individuals who understood the challenges of building a business in the property market.
“It’s one thing to have the knowledge, but having a network of people who are going through the same journey really pushed me forward. The support, mentorship, and encouragement have been essential in helping me grow both personally and professionally.”
Michelle Lewis’s story is a testament to the power of resilience, passion, and community. From nursing to leading her own property buyers agency, she has not only built a successful business but also become a role model for women in real estate.
